How to Store Sewing Patterns

Folding a pattern is like trying to fold a giant road map. It just doesn’t work.

If you’ve read my pattern weights post you know I like to take care of my patterns. Patterns are a piece of art, not to mention expensive. I also love the pictures especially on the vintage ones. I’ve quite a few patterns and used to store them in plastic bags. Not anymore! I’d like to share with you how I keep all my patterns safe and tidy!

Whenever I open a new pattern I cut out all the pieces, whether I’m using all of them or not.

To store them just cut the envelope apart (Yep, that’s right.), then glue the pieces to the front of a clasp envelope. I glue all the pieces to it, including the pattern size charts and any directions.

Fold the pattern pieces as neatly as possible and place them and anything else you want to keep with the pattern inside. If I’ve found something particular about a pattern I’ll also place any notes on it inside too. You can then file it in a cabinet or bin.

I’d love to hear of any other pattern storage ideas or suggestions. How do you keep your patterns organized?
